Why you should never use makeup testers in stores

You’ve probably heard about the germs lurking in makeup testers at stores, but did you know just how risky they can be? Let’s delve into why you should steer clear of these testers and how to stay safe when trying out makeup.

Disabling preservatives

Makeup contains preservatives to prevent bacterial growth. However, these preservatives can become contaminated if the product is not applied with a clean brush but instead with dirty fingers.

Herpes and blindness

Once bacteria are introduced into makeup, they can multiply rapidly. Testing mascara is particularly risky as contaminated mascara can lead to severe eye infections, potentially causing blindness. Similarly, applying contaminated lipstick can lead to herpes.

Legal action over lipstick

In the United States, a woman sued the makeup store Sephora after allegedly contracting herpes from testing a lipstick in the store. The incident prompted Sephora to emphasize the importance of hygiene and vow to be more vigilant in the future.

Safe testing

If you still want to test makeup without risking your health, don’t use the open testers in stores. Instead, ask a staff member for a pre-packaged tester. If your favorite store doesn’t offer these, it might be safer to shop elsewhere. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your health and beauty routine.

Remember, while makeup testers may seem convenient, they can pose serious health risks. Stay safe and prioritize your well-being when experimenting with makeup.
