Keloid: what is it, and how can you get rid of it?

A keloid is a scar, but unfortunately, not an ordinary scar. Keloids are often larger, more noticeable in colour, and are sometimes more painful. In this article, we will explain what exactly a keloid is and whether there is an accessible way to eliminate it.

What is a keloid?

A keloid scar is an overgrown scar characterised by an excessive growth of scar tissue. The keloid scar that forms often grows back larger than the original skin injury. Keloids are often red in colour but gradually lighten over time. Keloid spots are usually quite thick and may have a shiny appearance. Keloid scars can occur because of acne scars, burns, surgical procedures, tattoos, or piercings.

How can you get rid of it?

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to get rid of a keloid, as there are no effective (natural) measures to influence the course of a keloid. One possible approach is the surgical removal of a keloid, but the downside is that it can often grow back. After surgical removal, monthly injections of corticosteroids are often given. This treatment can be painful and may take multiple injections before the keloid becomes softer and smaller.

If this is doesn’t sound like something you want to explore, you can opt for treatment with silicone. Silicone can flatten scar tissue. This can involve the use of silicone sheets or a cream containing silicone. The advantages of this treatment are that it can be done at home and is painless. However, always discuss this with your doctor to determine the best approach for treating your keloid.
