Irresistible apple crisp

Whether you’re hosting a cozy gathering with loved ones or simply craving a warm and comforting dessert, this classic dish is sure to delight your taste buds and warm your soul. With its tender, cinnamon-spiced apples and crisp, buttery topping, it’s the perfect treat for any occasion. So, preheat your oven, grab your apron, and let’s get baking!

Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 6 cups sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

For the topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces

Instructions:

Preheat the oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish. Set aside.

Prepare the apple filling:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated with the sugar and spice mixture. Transfer the apple filling to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out into an even layer.

    Make the crisp topping:
  • In a separate mixing bowl, combine the old-fashioned rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, diced butter to the bowl. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and the butter is evenly distributed.

Assemble and bake:

  • Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish, covering the apples completely. Press down gently to compact the topping slightly.
  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  • Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Serve and enjoy:

  • Serve the warm apple crisp on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat. Enjoy the comforting flavors of fall with every delicious bite!
