How to properly clean your sex toys
Everyone is familiar with 18+ toys, but if you use them frequently, are you really cleaning them properly? Even if you don’t use them often, it’s important to clean them thoroughly. You can learn how to do this the ‘right way’ in this article.
Porous and non-porous
The method of cleaning depends on whether the toy is porous or non-porous. There are so-called porous and non-porous toys. The chances are high that you have purchased a non-porous toy because porous toys are not really sold anymore. This is because these toys are less safe and bacteria can grow on them more easily due to their not completely smooth surfaces. Porous toys are also recognized by the fact that they are very soft and flexible (such as the classic dildo with veins). Do you have a porous toy? Then it’s good to check on the packaging if it’s body-safe. Have you already thrown away the packaging? Then we recommend doing the same with the toy and replacing it with a non-porous one. This is because your porous toy may contain a lot of bacteria that you can’t wash off. Non-porous toys are usually made of silicone and sometimes glass or metal.
Why is it important?
Cleaning your sex toys is not only hygienic, but it also prevents unpleasant infections. Additionally, it ensures that your toy will have a longer lifespan. After using your toys, you may want to take a breather. Completely logical, of course, but don’t leave the used toys lying around for days. To ensure that the material of your toy is not damaged, it’s wise to clean it after use. This also prevents the formation of mold, which is fresh for yourself as well.
Toy cleaner
The best way to clean your toys is with a special toy cleaner. It doesn’t contain alcohol, but it does prevent unpleasant odors, bacteria, and mold. Apply the toy cleaner to the toy and rub it in well with a cloth. After about 2 minutes, you can rinse it under the tap. Make sure the cleaner is well rinsed off and dried before hiding it where no one can easily find it.
Water and soap
Don’t have toy cleaner at home? No problem. An easy way to quickly clean your toy is with lukewarm water and mild soap (check online if your soap is mild). Alternatively, antibacterial soap works well. Again, after cleaning your toy, rinse it well and dry it with a cloth to avoid soap getting on your genitals.
On the road
If you happen to be on the go and don’t have any of these things on hand, you can use an antibacterial wipe to clean it. This is a quick, effective, and safe way to get your toys clean. Just like with the other methods, be sure to rinse it well with water!
PRO tip:
If your toy has corners or edges, clean them with, for example, a cotton swab. This is easiest to do with a soapy solution; then clean your toy with the swab. This ensures that you clean all the edges and corners well, preventing bacteria from accumulating and ending up in your body.
